I want to do this... [Nov. 12th, 2008|09:02 pm]

Recently, I've gotten into playing Chess with real people, and while I was discussing this with a co-worker, we talked about people who can play games of Chess with each other in their minds. How the heck do you keep track of all the pieces in your mind? Some sort of mnemonic device? I can see how we keep track of up to 10 digits in a phone number by breaking it up into area code, city, and local numbers, so would an individual keep track of the pieces by breaking up the board into quadrants? Now, hardcore players seem to use this jargon where they say stuff from "king to king's rook 5" or something of that nature. No one I know understands it, but I do know that the chess board has lettering and numbering. The white king, for example, sits at Row 1, Column "E".

Maybe I should just try to play mental tic-tac-toe first...

Then move to mental Checkers...

(I don't like checkers)...

I, actually, hadn't heard about people playing mental chess games until my co-worker brought it up, but I did talk to someone who had a son or son in law who played a game of chess against him blindfolded and won. Unless he's just feeling up the pieces, which I doubt, he had to be keeping track of all that upstairs, so I guess that sorta counts as mental chess.

I wish I had a full day I could devote to trying to maintain a game of mental chess...
